Chinese brands now sell more than 750,000 vehicles a year in Europe. BYD, MG (SAIC), XPeng, NIO and Leapmotor have moved from curiosity to mainstream choice. If you bought one early, the question is: what will it be worth when you sell?
Three forces shape resale value
- EU countervailing duties — BYD +17 %, Geely +18.8 %, SAIC +35.3 %, XPeng/NIO +20.7 %, on top of the 10 % standard duty. New imports cost more, which protects the resale price of cars already in Europe.
- Local production expansion — BYD's Hungary plant, XPeng assembly at Magna Steyr in Austria, Leapmotor in Spain. EU-assembled units bypass the duty and apply downward pressure on early imports.
- Brand recognition gap — MG benefits from its UK heritage and resells closer to mainstream depreciation. BYD has built strong recognition fast. XPeng and NIO carry a brand-recognition penalty that depresses second-hand prices 5-10 % vs comparable Tesla.
Practical resale strategy
