Heavy Haulage, Low Loader Hire & Abnormal Load Transport Across Europe

Heavy Haulage & Plant Transport — InterCar pan-European tow truck and roadside assistance company

Overview

InterCar Logistik runs one of Europe's most flexible heavy haulage fleets, moving plant machinery, agricultural equipment, industrial cargo and abnormal loads across Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. Our fleet covers low loaders, semi low loaders, extendable trombone trailers, tilt-trailers and modular hydraulic platforms, with payload capacities from 12 to 80 tonnes — and beyond, by combining tractors and modular axles. Whether the load is a 25-tonne excavator going from a construction site to its next job, a vintage agricultural tractor on a private collection move, a wind-turbine subassembly or a piece of factory machinery, we plan and execute the transport with the precision the cargo demands. Every job starts with a clear technical brief: dimensions, weight, centre of gravity, ground clearance, fixing points, pickup and delivery access, road restrictions and timing constraints. Our route planners run the corridor in mapping software that flags bridge limits, low underpasses, restricted hours and weekend bans before we commit to a slot — which is why our on-time delivery rate on regulated abnormal-load corridors stays above 96 %.

Process & quality

Heavy and oversized transport is a permit-heavy discipline. In Germany, a Großraum- und Schwertransport requires a §29 StVO Erlaubnis or §46 StVO Ausnahmegenehmigung from each Land the convoy crosses, often with BF3 or BF4 escort vehicles for the widest loads. In France, "convoi exceptionnel" is split into three categories (catégorie 1 to 3) with strict requirements for escorts, gyrophares and police accompaniment above defined thresholds. In the UK, abnormal loads fall under the Special Types General Order with separate notification windows for the DVLA, the highway authorities and the police. In the Netherlands, exceptioneel transport is regulated by the RDW and requires specific ontheffing documents per route. Our permit desk handles every step on your behalf: filing the requests, attaching the technical drawings, agreeing on route variations with the authorities, and coordinating police escorts where mandatory. Because we operate the same network year after year, we know which prefectures, Landesbetriebe or RDW offices are responsive and where lead times stretch — and we plan around them.

Value & guarantees

Beyond standard plant haulage, InterCar Logistik specialises in the cargo that conventional carriers turn down. Indivisible loads close to bridge and weight limits, machinery with awkward fixing points or sensitive paint finishes, project cargo that needs synchronised arrival on a construction window, and cross-border combinations where one transport crosses three permit regimes — these are routine for us. We coordinate self-propelled modular transporters when axle weights demand it, mobile cranes for non-craneable load points, and on-site banksmen for the final manoeuvres. For construction firms, fleet operators, machinery dealers and end customers, our single point of contact replaces the usual chain of subcontractors. One quote, one paperwork file, one set of insurance certificates, one driver answering one phone — that is the standard our customers come back for.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Heavy Haulage

It depends on the combined weight and the route. In Germany and France, transports up to certain dimensions and total weights do not need a special permit, but plant machinery quickly exceeds those thresholds. Our team validates feasibility in 4 business hours and applies for permits where required — at no extra charge on standard corridors.

Standard German §29 permits issue in 5–10 business days. French convoi exceptionnel category 1 typically issues within 7 days; categories 2–3 require 10–15 working days. UK abnormal load notifications need 2–5 working days depending on dimensions. We file the requests as soon as we have the technical brief.

Yes. For payloads above 80 tonnes we deploy modular hydraulic platforms (SPMT) with additional axle lines. We have moved single pieces above 200 tonnes in cross-border project cargo operations. Send the technical brief and our heavy-haulage engineers will validate the solution.

When mandated by the permit, escort vehicles (BF3 / BF4 in Germany, équivalents in France) are listed transparently on the quote. We do not subcontract escorts blindly — they are part of our own dispatch and travel with the truck on the same job sheet.

Yes. Tractor transport, combine harvesters, balers, sprayers and self-propelled agricultural machinery are a regular part of our work. We use semi low loaders or extendable trailers depending on the machine's dimensions and weight.

Yes — we work with several European plant auction houses and machinery brokers. Our service includes pickup at the auction site, optional storage, and delivery to the end buyer with full documentation. Insurance covers the cargo from pickup to delivery.
