Germany Diesel Driving Bans — Cities, Euro Norms and What Owners Can Do

Germany Diesel Driving Bans — A Practical Owner Guide

Four German cities currently enforce a diesel driving ban: Hamburg (since June 2018), Stuttgart (since January 2019), Darmstadt (since June 2019), and Munich (since February 2023). All ~40 active Umweltzonen require the green badge (Schadstoffgruppe 4) since 2024. The EU air-quality directive tightens limits on 12 December 2026, which may trigger new bans.

Owner options for Euro 4 and Euro 5 diesels

  1. Verkaufen — Euro 5 still legal in most cities; cross-border resale to Eastern Europe through InterCar Autoankauf remains a viable exit.
  2. Abmelden + verschrotten — when the vehicle is no longer marketable, our authorised Demontagebetrieb collects free and issues the Verwertungsnachweis.
  3. Relocate — move the diesel to a non-Umweltzone area; check Saisonkennzeichen for occasional use.
